Upon returning to New England after a long hiatus overseas, Prof. David Manning quickly finds himself involved in yet another extraordinary archaeological adventure---one 500 years in the making. Drawn into an investigation of a mysterious and brutal murder in the desert country of West Texas, his determined effort to find the perpetrators sets him on the hunt for a lost Aztec treasure beyond all imagining. Both are inextricably entwined. Pitted against a ruthless, multi-millionaire descendant of one of the original conquistadors---a man who will stop at nothing to gain the prize---Manning finds himself contending at every turn with an array of cold-blooded killers, all equally unwavering in their desire to see him dead. *3rd Adventure of Professor David Manning

The Emperor Treasure Daniel Leston Mr Books

I am pleased to have discovered another author with another adventure / thriller series to keep me up late at night. I really enjoy archeology type mysteries and this one delivers. This story takes up where the first one left off. With the same core characters and a snappy delivery it's hard to put down. I have already read the third book of the series and am currently reading series four. A good read

The Emperor Treasure Daniel Leston Mr Books Reviews

Fun book! I loved the flashbacks to the Aztec empire and the looting by the conquistadors. The descriptive narrative about West Texas and East New Mexico were interesting although I found the driving times to be pretty far off base. West Texas is VAST! It takes hours to drive from one place to another. Most of the time, the author solved that timeline with helicopters, so no big deal.
I wish the heroine could have kept some of the gold somehow! But she still has her ancestral land I'm guessing.
Good book!
While it is essentially well written, I found myself halted in the midst of plot devices and action sequences by misspelled words, many of which threw me off the plot line. Also, the correctly spelled word "clamored" was used to mean "climb up", which is a different word "clambered". It seems like the story was dictated and then printed.
I am curious about the other David Manning books but need to brace myself before reading them .
I am very sorry to not give this book at least 4 stars because I love the thinking behind the plots & characters.
Enid Texas? Trayler County? Neither exist. Enid is a city in Oklahoma, no where near either the Rio Grand or the Mexican border. "Ennis" Texas is barely closer than Enid Oklahoma. So early on I was thrown out of my bubble of "suspended disbelief".

The rumor/legend of Aztec gold being hidden in the US Southwest is long-standing. There are clif-dwellings in the Texas canyon s of the Rio Grand. The river runs from the Gulf of Mexico to southern Colorado. Some tales place the supposed treasure in the Grand Canyon.

Next in the final gunfight the author swapped out Glock 19, pistol and revolver with aclarity, plus clips and magazines. Anyone familiar with guns would spot that error like a cat dumping on an linoleum floor.

The storytelling wasn't too bad, other than those glaring errors jerking me back to reality. Characters were fairly well developed. The pace was decent. If the author had set down for half an hour with an atlas of northern Mexico, Texas and the Southwest or an equal amount of time in any gun store this book might have rated 4 stars. Maybe.
I don't know when authors who use modern technology are going to realize that spell check isn't enough. I liked the story. The action was well-paced; it was truly a thriller. Unfortunately, the typos were really annoying.
Needs to be re-edited for verb tense and sentence structure. Most of all, no one should ever describe a gun battle who is not aware that revolvers do not use clips. And the correct term for the bullet storage devise is not clip, but magazine. Please note that revolvers do not use those either. Sloppy work.
Nice enough adventure mystery plot, but confounding mixture of real and fictitious locations. Tragic mash of contradictory terminology toward the end, I can't help but wish the author had looked at a map for a few minutes and taken a few more minutes to learn a tiny bit of firearm terminology. Perfect for those with an interest in archaeology, hilarious if you have even a tiny level of familiarity with guns. This could have been really good, but still comes up to okay.
This is a worthwhile read. It's a story of the search for Inca gold hidden in the wilds of Texas by Incas escaping from the Spanish. The lead character is an archeologist. Rich bad guys are involved and go to any lengths to exploit it. There is treachery, murder, double cross and plenty of action. Apparently the author didn't do much research. Enid Texas which is south of Dallas is placed down near the Mexican border and is the center of action. At times the weapons they carry seem to alternate between being revolvers and semiautomatic pistols but the real irritant to me was the clips (magazines) they were putting in revolvers. If you don't know what you're talking about and don't want to do any research then keep things general and don't get into details. Other than the aggravations just mentioned the writing was generally ok. She became he a time or two but it was usually not confusing.
